Our school is built around 5 main pillars:

1. Children learn and play in mixed age groupings as well as their own ages.

2. We employ subject specific teachers, and every student is taught by every teacher. This allows us as a school community to know our students, and for students to thrive and excel in different learning environments.

3. We prepare food, eat, and clean up together. This is missing from the vast majority of schools.

4. We follow a rigorous academic program, free from screens. Children show extended attention spans, and build skills through explicit teaching and thorough consolidation.

5. Once a week, we get out into the world. By tram, car, bus or on foot, we head out to explore our world through an enriching programs of outings.

Our school is small by design. Currently we are running classes from Prep to Grade 3, and this will extend to Grade 4 in 2027.

In mainstream school settings, children are grouped by age and generally stay within that age range. Friendships outside of a child’s age range is often restricted by zones of the school, different play times and is sometimes actively discouraged.

We believe that mixed-age learning and play is missing from children’s lives. We - along with child development experts such as Maggie Dent - believe that there is deep enrichment provided by children playing and learning in mixed ages.

At Beit Hillel, you will see kids of all ages and interests playing together. This far broadens their social horizons from only their year level to the whole school.
